Manual

Connect a MIDI keyboard, open a MusicXML score, and get instant colour feedback while you play. This page covers the basics of the browser app — still evolving, free to use, and separate from Modus Practica.

Core idea

LumiNote renders real sheet music from MusicXML and listens to your MIDI input. Notes are matched to the score: green when correct, red when a required note is still missing.

What you need

Chrome or Edge (Web MIDI)
MIDI keyboard (USB or DIN via interface)
MusicXML (.musicxml, .xml, or .mxl)
Speakers or headphones

No account and no cloud upload — processing stays in your browser.

1. Load a score

Open the app.
Click Open MusicXML and choose a .musicxml, .xml, or .mxl file.
Or click Load Example for the built-in sample — or browse the ABRSM-oriented repertoire library in the app.

2. Connect MIDI

Click Connect MIDI.
Allow browser permission if asked.
If several devices appear, pick yours from the dropdown on the status bar.

If connection fails: use HTTPS (or localhost) and Chrome or Edge. Web MIDI is not available in every browser.

3. Practice controls

Play / Pause / Stop

Transport for listening or checking rhythm at the set tempo.

Selection

Drag a box over notes to define a practice range (also sets the loop).

Loop

Repeats the selected region; without a selection it loops the whole score.

Start note

Choose where the cursor begins, then click a note in the score.

Linear view

One long horizontal system — useful for flow and timing.

Pan / Maximize

Move around large scores, or expand the score area.

Tempo

Open the tempo control and set BPM (about 40–200).

4. Feedback colours

Blue: selected practice notes
Green: correct note / finished chord
Light green: correct note inside an unfinished chord
Red: required notes still missing

5. Tips & troubleshooting

No sound? Play one key to wake AudioContext; check system volume.
No MIDI? Confirm HTTPS and a supported browser.
Empty score? The file may not be valid MusicXML — try Load Example.
Lag on huge scores? Prefer smaller excerpts or linear view for focus.

Practice tip: start slow and aim for steady green feedback. Use short loops on hard bars; filter by staff when one hand causes repeated errors.

Learning note: LumiNote is a practice aid for sheet music and sight-reading. It does not replace a qualified piano teacher.

Still in development

LumiNote is a fun side project and keeps evolving. Planned ideas include finger-number overlays, error heatmaps, adaptive tempo, and multiple loop segments — nothing is promised on a fixed timeline.
